SMSCE and Citizenship: Caritas in Action

At St Edmund’s, Catholic Social Teaching is at the heart of our mission and helps our children understand how faith should shape the way we live, act and serve others. Through our weekly Catholic Social Teaching lessons, particularly in Key Stage Two, pupils explore themes such as human dignity, solidarity, stewardship of creation and care for the vulnerable using the Caritas in Action programme. These lessons encourage children to reflect on local, national and global issues and consider how they can make a positive difference in the world.

Our pupils are given meaningful opportunities to put these teachings into action. Through charity fundraising, food collection drives, support for Caritas projects and participation in campaigns such as the St Joseph’s Penny Appeal, children learn that they have a responsibility to care for others and contribute to the common good. The GIFT Team and other pupil leaders also take an active role in environmental projects and community initiatives, helping children develop a deeper sense of stewardship for God's creation and a commitment to serving their local community.

These experiences make a significant contribution to pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development. Children learn to reflect on their beliefs and values, understand right and wrong through the lens of the Gospel, appreciate and respect people from different faiths and cultures, and develop the confidence to become active and responsible citizens. Through prayer, worship, Religious Education, charitable action and wider curriculum opportunities, our children grow in compassion, empathy and social responsibility, living out our school values of Love, Faith and Service each day.
